Research and Development

We do research and development on every aspect of concrete to perfect and improve our mixes as well as improve overall concrete quality and capabilities. There are hundreds of combinations of cements, concrete admixtures, aggregates and other cementitious materials including pozzalons and synthetic fibers. Prairie tests every ingredient used to make concrete by various physical and chemical procedures, including automatic titration, hydration of heat examination, calorimetric examination, X-ray diffraction and fluorescence, and spectrophotometry. We also have the only electron scanning microscope in the Midwest which allows crystalline structure analysis and x-ray diffraction chemical analysis. Our lab is equipped to test the characteristics of hardened concrete, admixtures, aggregates, and other supplementary cementitious materials.

Prairie Material is leading the way in creating and testing ultra-high strength concrete. We have invested in a custom designed grinding machine that allows us to create precise ultra-high strength samples. As a result, ASTM has requested Prairie's lab to help set the new standards for preparing and breaking ultra high strength concrete.
