{"id":2974,"date":"2024-12-30T16:40:10","date_gmt":"2024-12-30T16:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prairieprod.vcnastaging.com\/?p=2974"},"modified":"2024-12-30T16:40:10","modified_gmt":"2024-12-30T16:40:10","slug":"no-place-like-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/fr\/no-place-like-home\/","title":{"rendered":"No Place Like Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last July, 3-year-old\u00a0<strong>Colton Cook<\/strong>\u00a0of Pekin, Illinois fell and hurt his back.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing too unusual for this active tot, who\u2019d spent his summer swimming, playing t-ball and soccer, say parents\u00a0<strong>Dustin<\/strong>\u00a0et\u00a0<strong>SamiJo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But as the days passed and their son kept asking them to rub where it hurt, they wondered what might be wrong.<\/p>\n<p>SamiJo took Colton to the doctor. A pathologist looking at the boy\u2019s blood tests acted on a hunch, leading to more tests that revealed Colton was fighting leukemia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were on the road within 12 hours, heading for St. Jude\u2019s Hospital in Memphis,\u201d says<strong>\u00a0Julie Cook<\/strong>, Colton\u2019s grandmother. \u201cHe started an aggressive course of chemotherapy right away.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Back home, another challenge waited<\/h2>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2975 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/colton1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/colton1.jpg 286w, https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/colton1-15x12.jpg 15w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After 6 weeks, doctors said Colton could return home to rest between rounds of treatment. But they made clear his living environment would need to be scrupulously clean and free of dust.<\/p>\n<p>Dustin and SamiJo had just started an addition to make room for their growing family. \u201cThe house and yard were pretty torn up,\u201d Julie says. \u201cThey had no kitchen, no garage, no patio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, with construction dust everywhere, they also had no way to bring Colton home.<\/p>\n<p>Family and friends got busy. Dustin\u2019s buddy\u00a0<strong>Jimmy Poole<\/strong>\u00a0organized other friends with homebuilding skills. The team reached out to Prairie Material and other local businesses for the supplies needed to finish the work ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n<h2>A village gathers to get it done<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2976 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/colton2-276x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/colton2-276x300.jpg 276w, https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/colton2-11x12.jpg 11w, https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/colton2.jpg 282w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gifts flowed in \u2013 from concrete needed for the garage, steps and patio to plumbing, cabinets and fixtures for the kitchen. Crew members donated time and talents, kept going by neighbors who dropped by to cook meals and cheer them on.<\/p>\n<p>While Colton faced the hardest work of all in Memphis, the crew finished up in Pekin. The fully renovated home was soon ready for Colton, his parents and baby sister Brylee to return.<\/p>\n<p>The family has expressed heartfelt thanks to the entire community, including Prairie,\u00a0<strong>Hoerr Construction<\/strong>\u00a0et\u00a0<strong>Mathis-Kelley Construction Supply Company<\/strong>, for the generosity that made Colton\u2019s homecoming possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were honored to help,\u201d says<strong>\u00a0Denny Oedewaldt<\/strong>, general manager for Prairie in Central Illinois and Indiana. \u201cOur hearts go with Colton as he returns to St. Jude\u2019s for treatment later this month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>All of us at Prairie Material wish you and your family a happy, healthy holiday season.
