The building joins IU\u2019s Data Center and Innovation Center as part of a modern and growing technological park.<\/p>\n<h2>An active partnership shapes the plan<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2979 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/CIB2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/CIB2.jpg 217w, https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/CIB2-9x12.jpg 9w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>More than 7,800 cubic yards of Prairie concrete were used to create CIB\u2019s foundation, floor decks and parking surfaces, reports\u00a0<strong>Pat Kinder<\/strong>, project manager for\u00a0<strong>Messer Construction\u00a0<\/strong>of Indianapois, general contractors for the project.<\/p>\n<p>Long before construction began, a user group comprised of IU engineers, architects and IT employees came together with Messer and project architects\u00a0<strong>SmithGroup<\/strong>\u00a0of Washington, DC to explore ideas for the new IT center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were high expectations all the way around,\u201d says Kinder. \u201cEarning the highest possible LEED certification while planning for long service life and ease of maintenance were key. Equally important was the goal of creating a stimulating environment that would foster collaboration and innovation \u2013 a place that would attract top IT talent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group studied landmark structures created for Google, Yahoo and other IT leaders, Kinder says. \u201cThen we looked at ways to meet the various goals within the challenges of the building site and budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Green from the ground up<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2980 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/inpro3-300x249.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/inpro3-300x249.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/inpro3-14x12.jpg 14w, https:\/\/www.prairie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/inpro3.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Messer and concrete contractors\u00a0<strong>Lithko Contracting, Inc.<\/strong>, broke ground on the project in April 2010. New concrete parking areas were placed first, usin\u200bg an integrally colored mix named \u201cIndiana Beige\u201d by Prairie mix designers. Per new standards adopted by the university for all parking surfaces, mesh fibers were added to the mix to ensure durability and extend service life.<\/p>\n<p>Foundation work followed, with concrete decks poured in place within the steel-frame structure. To meet scheduling demands, Lithko performed many pours at night. Additives were used to address low temperatures as construction \u200bcontinued into the winter months. Unique design elements such as the ledge detail that tops the foundation wall required careful work and specialized forms, Kinder notes.<\/p>\n<p>In line with the university\u2019s focus on sustainability, Messer and Lithko limited waste and recycled as many leftover materials as possible during construction. Furniture, fixtures, and other materials from the university\u2019s old computer center were reclaimed for further use.<\/p>\n<h2>Proud partners in a sustainable future<\/h2>\n<p>The new IT center, which has earned LEED Gold certification, is a source of pride for Prairie employees, says\u00a0<strong>Jeff Conquest<\/strong>, general manager for Prairie Indiana.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is one of several prestigious buildings we\u2019ve helped construct at IU in recent years,\u201d he says. \u201cWe are pleased to support the university\u2019s growth and its commitment to environmentally sound construction.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With its striking, open-plan design and deep commitment to environmentally sound construction, Indiana University\u2019s new\u00a0Cyberinfrastructure Building\u00a0(CIB) proves that green can indeed be beautiful.
